I am pleased to share that I will be presenting my research, “Ruins, Capital, Bodies: Afterlives of Cancelled Negatives in the Smithsonian’s Underwood & Underwood Glass Stereograph Collection,” at the Photography Network Annual Symposium 2026. The paper will be featured in Panel 4: Archives and the Impact of Seeing, taking place on Saturday, 7 November 2026, from 11:45 am to 1:30 pm EST as part of the symposium’s online programme.
This year’s edition, ‘Vision and Veiling: Photographic Resilience and Sociopolitical Change’, brings together photographers, historians, curators and scholars to explore how photography persists, adapts and circulates in the face of censorship, erasure, political pressure, institutional constraints and shifting cultural climates.

Drawing on research conducted during my The Fulbright Program Fellowship at the Smithsonian’s Underwood & Underwood Glass Stereograph Collection, the presentation explores an unexpected encounter within the archive, where nineteenth-century photographs of Greek archaeological ruins were stored alongside intimate American domestic interiors in the very same boxes. Examining stereographic negatives in which one image was deliberately cancelled, scratched out, or rendered unusable, the project considers how these damaged fragments reveal the cultural and institutional forces shaping photographic production and circulation.
